As the countries race to stop this catastrophe, the virus COVID-19 gets stronger day by day. Individuals from different fields have contributed to this pandemic with their ideas and innovations. And I'm honoured to share this innovation of a young inventor!
Master Himantha Randima is a student studying in grade 09 at Ananda College. He has built 13 innovations. As the health departments advise the public to follow safety measures people tend to forget about the rules and regulations. Henceforth, this young inventor came up with a contraption to provide an assist to the public with their safety hygiene. That's how the "Disinfectant Dustbin" came to his young innovative mind. He started to work on this idea on the 13th of April. The main idea of this innovation is that when we use tissues and dispose of, the tissue can still carry germs. Which will be infectious. It could be harmful to the people around them. But it was his kind heart that was brought into attention as his concern for cleaning personnel and the need to provide a safe space of work for them was what laid the foundation for this invention.
The Disinfectant Dustbin works its way around a thermal source leading to the disinfection of the disposal of personal protective wear such as tissues, masks automatically inside the bin. His invention wasn’t limited to a thermal waste holder alone but was upgraded giving rise to an application where the user can change the temperature as well as monitor the temperature within the bin via a mobile device. The bin is put together in such a way that it is not only portable but is reusable. It is powered by batteries, but it can also be used as a stationed bin by using a direct power source. Little Himantha’s knowledge and urge to serve the community is unfathomable indeed!
As every good thing comes with challenges, he also came across not a few but many challenges to overcome. His works on this project kickstarted during the time of the lockdown imposed on the whole country, therefore, finding the required gadgets was a struggle indeed and to top it off purchasing of the materials needed to build this was one tough job. Due to some of the financial issues he underwent just as much as everyone in the world did due to the pandemic, he built it using the materials he already had with him; some obtained from his previous inventions. Master Himantha has come to prove us that nothing could stop us from doing what we are passionate about when we truly put our heart and soul into work! Once he was all done with his innovation, he had to face a few issues with respect to obtaining the patent license. Himantha who has applied for the patent license 13 times but got rejected saying that he had some errors while filling the applications didn’t fail to somehow bring into light his work of wonder. It was Master Himantha that shared his parent's lack of understanding on this subject matter and the inability to assist him to a greater extent which led him to gain external help. Having said that, this young innovator had a piece of advice to the new young inventors,
“Everyone starts building their invention but when they fail a couple of times they quit. It’s natural to fail multiple times but no one should give up on their dreams and should always have hope. where there is a will there's a way”.
