International Runway 2020

Tashya Wickramarachchi

Fashion is a significant part of our culture, and it’s most definitely more than just a pretty dress!

It all started one night, before quarantine, self-isolation, social distancing, curfews and the great pandemic began, but for ICBT's Rotaract club it was a night of diverse cultures, a night that reminded us of different ethnicities, a night that displayed various customs and traditions, a night that ignited incredible talents, a night of limitless music and boundless dancing and simply happiness. Yes, it's the International Runway 2020.

7 Great countries all over the globe shared their universal ideals while nurturing unity, prosperity and mutual respect. International Runway stood as a celebration of people, cultures, fashion, friends and much more.

The Rotaractors of ICBT who took us back to the antique Greece whose performance was one of a battle; seduction and love, brought glory home with their magnificent performance! They have officially managed to go down in history as the winners of the first biggest Fashion Showdown of Rotaract 3220.

The Rotaract Club of Midtown certainly won the “Best Cheering Squad” award along with the “More the Merrier” award. For this, the bison of Midtown never fails. In frames, with their spell outs. They also brought African style to the next level with their tribal essences fashion integrated. They unveiled a fashion line showcasing 3 cultures in Africa. The collection presented how fashion influenced these cultures and how it is possible to incorporate native indigenous elements with modern fashion trends in Western cultures. In a theme of a billion reasons to believe in Africa, their emphasis was to demonstrate that while there are changes in fashion, the connection between cultures that it has generated remains the same.

The Rotaract Club of IIT represented England highlighting the status and customs exhibited by the English with costumes reflecting a British man's simplicity and grace while the Rotaract Club of West brought forth the beauty of the Japanese culture through a story of a foreigner's visit to the land of the rising sun! Their act corresponded to a popular song. On the other hand, Rotaract Club of SLIT showcased the clothing variations carried across different ages of China who represented it most creatively through the passing of a sky lantern to each other as they walked the ramp.

The Rotaract Club of Fort represented Sri Lanka, our very own culture filled with richness! What's not to love about it? The people, the dances, the food are all things that contribute to the uniqueness of Sri Lanka. Thus, the Rotaractors of Fort presented the diverse culture along with a touch of baila, influenced by the Portuguese Burghers and Sri Lankan Kaffirs.

As the performances came to an end, the ramp was set for all Rotaractors to be themselves as they individually owned the ramp with their performances, poses and walks. Out of which, our amazing judges for the day Miss. Minoli Dayaratne, Miss. Ornella Gunusekara along with Mr Brian Kerkoven awarded the best male and female performers to Rtr. Lalantha Panditharathne and Rtr. Tanuli Gunawardana from the Rotaract Club of Kurunegala whose members represented a multicultural nation that has a massive fan base for its film industry all over the world. It was a time to recall a couple of our favourite moments in action and thriller movies where both Kollywood and Bollywood highlights were brought forth from India.

The glorious Fashion Showdown which commenced with the gracing of our Chief Guest for the evening, Dean and Chief Executive Officer of the International College of Business and Technology – Dr Sampath Kannangara, special guests, President of the Rotary Club of Cinnamon Gardens Rtn. Paul Harris Fellow. Arosha Jayasundera, Youth Services Chair of the Rotary Club of Cinnamon Gardens for the year 2019-20– Rotarian Lakna Adikari, District Rotaract Representative – Rotarian Rotaractor. Past President. Krishan Balaji, District Rotaract Representative-Elect –Rtr. Past President. Kasun Sigera, along with several other special guests and our judges for the day was given a token of appreciation; a pot of succulents, facilitating the go green theme.

And DJ Trevin shook the walls of the ICBT auditorium with beats that never failed to entertain the Rotarators, especially with the famous “sumihiripane.”

Thus, ended the Rotaract Fashion Showdown celebrating the finest of the finest!
