SELF MANAGEMENT FOR A SUCCESSFUL LIFE

Tashya Wickramarachchi

I have exams tomorrow and I haven’t even touched a book. I have my assignment due in 2 days and I have only completed 40% of it. I have to give a speech today but I’m not prepared. These are some of the things that we hear on a day to day basis. But is it something to worry about? Is it something to be anguish about? How can we deal with it? Can self-management help?

Some of the top 5 life skills that is required to lead a superior life is Self-belief, Communication, Self

Management, Teamwork and Problem solving. Among them self-management plays a huge role.

Self-management is about making a choice to do more than you need to and what you think you are capable of. Self-Management sounds like being your own boss, but instead of running and managing a business you have to run and manage your own self. Running and managing yourself meaning, keeping yourself together through tough times, and picking up yourself every time life lets you down, managing yourself both psychically and emotionally, being a role model to your own self, and thriving to become a better version of yourself than the day before.

Imagine yourself sitting for an exam in 5 days of time. Your best friend calls you for a movie night. What would you do? Would you choose your future over fun? Would you say no? You would say no. probably because of the thundering slaps and endless lectures you’ll receive from parents, specifically Sri Lankan parents. But if it was not the case, would you say no for a movie night? Would you start to prepare for your exam early without staying until the day before the exam? It’s time to think about it.

By taking an effort to manage our selves every day we can improve. And ultimately result in realizing ones hidden talents and will allow you to use them productively as well. You will start to see yourself in a new light with confidence, you will move forward with enthusiasm, you can start setting goals achieving them and setting yourself bigger goals to achieve as increased self-confidence will enable you to achieve more.

Some of the most important ways to manage yourself to lead a successful life are as follows;

1) Working hard- It could be a long, busy and tiring day. You might be exhausted, but would you keep grinding? Would you get back to working? Or would you fall asleep on your sofa? Grinding daily will help you to become a better version of yourself. Always remember that hard work will pay off and endless joy will be an end result.

2) Be healthy- Your health might seem like stating the obvious. But how many times have you skipped breakfast or lunch to complete a task? Your heath should come first if you want to live a strong and a healthily managed lifestyle. I could sit and list general advice, but the main one I think you should consider is your state of worry. Mental health is just as important as your physical health.

3) Pushing yourself daily- By encouraging yourself to work daily even though it could be rough sometimes will help you to build up key skills for a successful life. Why wait till the day before the exam to start studying? Why stress yourself? Instead you can prepare for it daily and when it comes to the day before your exam, you can refer your notes and walk with confidence to the examination hall and leave with peace.

4) Confidence- Do not underestimate yourself. Do not doubt your abilities. Do not let yourself down. Do not stress about it. Because with proper self-management there is no place for doubt, as proper self-management will boost your confidence. And confidence will assist you to walk with a strong personality to face the society and the challenges life offers you.

Self-management is yet another element, another piece in life’s big puzzle. To get going with self-management we just need to start. Each and every day, keep pushing, compete with who you were the day before and that is the secret for a successful and a well-managed lifestyle. When self-management becomes a key factor all the hard work one does will be enjoyed as it will bring you a satisfying and a productive feeling. Therefore utilize self-management in your life, give it a try!
