The Body Switch

Tashya Wickramarachchi

Kevin Bright is a senior studying theatre at Julliard. He moved to New York last December to make it easy to focus on his third and final year at college. And just last month his younger brother Denver joined the music department at Julliard as a transfer student from Massachusetts, which they lived. Kevin had his finals to prepare for, and Denver had his first term to get through. Kevin was trying to finish up submitting his last manuscript when Denver decided to practice his drumming skills. (Kevin walks into Denver’s room)

Kevin: What the hell do you think you’re doing?

Denver: I have my mid-terms the day after, I need to go through these footnotes!!

Kevin: I’m trying to finish up the manuscript for my finals so you have to find somewhere else to practice your dumb music

Denver: What do you want me to do?

Kevin: I don’t care how you do it just don’t make any noise.

Denver: Ugh I Hope you fail your finals jackass (Denver storms out of the room and leaves the apartment slamming the door shut)

It was the middle of the night when a chill ran through Kevin’s body and at the same time Denver woke up with a jump. Kevin was filled with a feeling of suspicion as he saw a white light fill up the pitch-black room blinding him momentarily. Denver could only look on as the white light flashed across his eyes and slipped in through the door crack separating his and Kevin’s rooms. As soon as it started, when the light left both rooms and they were both left staring ahead blankly into the darkroom surrounded by the blackness of the eerie night. Both boys settled back down to sleep with an unsettling feeling, writing off the weird flashing lights to mere hallucinations and bad dreams with a restored intention to get a good night’s sleep to finish the final work before their exams starting bright and early the next morning.

(The next morning)

Kevin pushed off his blanket and got out of bed ready to start his day. He walked up to the mirror. He blankly stared back at his reflection in the mirror for a few passing seconds. He blinked once or twice. Then a blood-curdling scream was heard through the entire neighbourhood waking Denver up. He ran into his room in a rush to find himself glancing back at him. Ear piercing screams flowed through the air and resonated off the four walls of the bedroom. The both of them stared at each other in horror. As reality dawned upon them, they stuttered out the questions plaguing their minds.

Kevin: Denver! YOU’RE ME!

Denver: and YOU’RE ME!!

Kevin went to his brother and poked his head.

Denver: “Ow… It hurts.”

Kevin: “You’ve become me”

Denver: “I think I look more handsome when I look at myself from someone else’s eyes”

Kevin: “Oh shut up, we need to find a way to reverse this. I don’t want to be stuck in your stinking body for the rest of my life.”

Denver: “Well I don’t want to be in your body either. You must have found a way to steal my handsome looking body from me.”

Kevin: “Stop saying stupid things. Why would I want to trade my perfectly fine body for this?” Denver: “I think it would be a smart choice if we just kept aside the arguments and focus on thinking a way to turn this back to normal.”

Kevin: “Agreed… How could this have happened anyway? This shouldn't have happened”

Denver: “Yeah but I’m perfectly sure this isn’t a dream. All I remember is that I fell asleep, that’s it” Kevin: “And in the morning our souls were switched… I don’t have time to be wasting on this, I have an exam”

He was in disbelief

Denver: “How about we get through our exams and worry about this later?” Kevin: “How is that even possible? You mean like you do my exam and I do your recital?” Denver: “Do you have a better idea?” Kevin: “Well I don’t think so… We need to co-operate” Denver: “Yeah we need to share each other’s knowledge”

Kevin: “Let’s have an agreement, we both work together and help each other until the exams are over and we find a way to switch us back to normal… ok?”

Denver: “OK” So under the agreement, both of them decided to help each other out and get through their assessments. Kevin taught his brother the theatre materials and Denver taught his brother music.

While they were practising, one person was watching them, the fairy who switched their bodies. She was happy that her experiment was going exactly as she planned. She’d been watching them ever since they started to share the same apartment, but they weren’t getting along very well. She just wanted them to be happy and of course, she can get a little mischievous at times. It was the night before their assessments they wished each other good luck and went to bed hoping everything would work just fine. Kevin: “Tomorrow’s the day” Denver: “yeah. Just don’t mess up ok and good luck” Kevin: “Of course I wouldn’t. Don’t panic about the exam and it should be ok. Good luck” “Maybe I should just switch them back as a reward for being nice to each other. And teaching is the best way to study, isn’t it?” the fairy thought. “Yeah, I’ll switch them back”. None of them felt any change in the rooms as both of them were very tired after several sleepless nights. They were floating in their dreamlands when the fairy had her next mischievous idea. “Haaaaam”, Denver threw his hands in the air and stretched as he yawned then he squinted his eyes as he came back to reality…

“Today’s the day”, he thought and jumped out of his bed. He was about to open the door of the room when he realized he is in Kevin’s room. But he clearly remembered that he slept in his room last night. How come he is in Kevin’s room? He scratched the back of his as he unconsciously turned himself to face the mirror and that’s when he saw his true self in the mirror. A scream was heard which woke Kevin up. He rushed to open the door and went to the other room where the scream came from. That’s when both of them knew that they switched back. They burst into laughter with teary eyes. Kevin: “Brother, we are switched back” Denver: “I dunno whether it's alright to be happy cause we practised each other’s stuff and now we are back to being our normal selves.”

Kevin: “Don’t you think you’ve practised the best the way you did it this time by teaching me? I think we studied well” Denver: “Maybe you are right. Let’s get going” So finally, Kevin sat for his theatre exam while Denver successfully faced his recital. Both of them nailed their exams well and were cheerfully back in their apartment. But there was one thing which wasn’t usual… their friendly gestures.
